Crazy horse leather is the finish behind our Vintage Crazy Horse Leather Bifold Wallet. If you’ve handled one, you’ve probably noticed that it looks slightly rugged, shows lighter streaks where it bends, and never looks quite the same as the next wallet. Here’s what’s going on, how it ages, and how to look after it.
What is crazy horse leather?
Despite the name, crazy horse leather isn’t made from horses. It’s typically cowhide that has been treated with oils and waxes, giving it a slightly rough, rustic surface with a lived-in look. The name is commonly linked to its traditional use in saddle-making, although accounts of its origin vary.
It’s worth knowing that “crazy horse” describes a finish rather than a guaranteed leather grade, so the character of the leather can differ between makers.
Why it changes colour when you bend it: the pull-up effect
Because the oils and waxes sit in the leather, they shift when it’s bent, scratched or handled. That movement lightens the colour in those spots – known as the pull-up effect. It’s why a crazy horse wallet shows paler streaks along folds and edges, along with natural surface markings and colour variation.
On our Vintage wallet, those variations are part of the design: every piece has its own pattern of texture, markings and tone.
How crazy horse leather ages
Crazy horse leather tends to darken with use and develop a richer patina, particularly where it’s handled most. Rather than staying perfectly smooth or uniform, it records how you carry it. If you want a wallet that still looks factory-new in a year, a smooth finish will suit you better; if you like gear that shows its history, this is the appeal.
How to care for a crazy horse leather wallet
- Clean gently. Wipe marks with a soft, lightly damp cloth. Avoid harsh or chemical cleaners, which can strip the wax finish.
- Keep it from soaking. The waxed surface copes with a little moisture, but the leather isn’t waterproof. If it gets wet, blot it and let it dry naturally.
- Condition occasionally. A leather balm or conditioner can help keep it supple. Conditioning often darkens this type of leather, so test on a small, hidden area first.
- Break it in slowly. A new wallet is snug. Don’t stretch or overfill it at first – let the leather soften and adjust to your cards with regular use.
Crazy horse leather vs smooth leather vs carbon fibre
All three GLAXMIX bifolds share the same layout – up to 15 cards, 2 ID windows, a cash compartment for folded Australian banknotes and RFID-blocking protection – so the choice comes down to the finish.

In March 2026, Elden Reviews published a hands-on video of the GLAXMIX crazy horse leather wallet. The reviewer unboxes it, shows the card slots with thumb push-out cut-outs, the divided note section and the full 15-card capacity, and points out that the same wallet also comes in smooth leather and carbon fibre versions.
Disclosure: the reviewer says at the start of the video that GLAXMIX sent the wallet for review, and the video description includes Amazon affiliate links, which means the creator may earn a commission from purchases made through them.
